You gotta own it, love it

One rule I have learned over the years is that the most brilliant design, approach, or rationale matters little if the client isn’t comfortable with it.

A simile I often use with clients is to ask them to think of my work as a jacket they might wear. A jacket that may have the most exclusive fashion label sewed on to it; the fabric may be the most exquisite they will ever own; it maybe the most sought after fashion item going. Yet if that jacket isn’t to their liking, if they don’t feel comfortable in it, then the label, material and value of the jacket accounts for nothing.

You need to be able to wear a jacket that you feel comfortable in.

And that is the same with a design. Whether it is a logo or a design of an annual report, the client needs to stand behind it with confidence. They need to feel confident in what the design says about them.

So sometimes the work I do, well, it may not be the best. But it is what the client feels comfortable with.

So, while the end product may not be the ideal solution,  it is what the client feels comfortable with.
